We seek quality private market performance - the 15%, in annualized returns - while investing in life-changing businesses - the Change we want to see.
We believe these goals are mutually cooperative rather than mutually exclusive. (That's the & in the middle.)
We use capital as a positive force in the world.
While we expect to receive reasonable returns for our risk, we equally care about finding the next generation of emerging managers and funding startups tackling the world's biggest problems.
We have five investment themes, all around systemic design challenges:
🔋 Energy Reclaimers: addressing the storage, transmission, and re-capture of energy that is lost in transfer and delivery
💊 Preventative Health: avoiding health problems as cost-effective treatment strategy
🍲 Food Waste: improving existing systems of production, distribution, storage, and waste management
👩🏭 Decent Work: building businesses who exist to invest in labor, not exploit labor
♥️ The Passion Economy: positioning niche businesses with premium products that are co-created with their customers
💰 We take a 0.5-1% position in a pre-seed/seed fund, less so in a growth equity fund. Direct placement varies and is driven by meaningful participation.
🌍 Right now, we invest in US-based vehicles, although we do invest in LATAM, Africa, and Europe.
🤝 In addition to capital, we provide free hands-on coaching for portfolio companies and a long-term perspective on relationship building. We want you to succeed for decades.
There is too much money, inflating private market valuations. And yet, there are obvious inefficiencies in delivering capital to some people based on gender, race, and geography.
This is clearly a problem with the firms delivering the capital, not the opportunities.
We believe that the next generation of fund managers is going to outperform traditional VCs by providing capital to the places without bias. It's a core strategy in our investment thesis.
As of Q2 2022, our investments in fund managers are comprised of the following:
We have also made several follow on commitments to initial funds for subsequent series to ensure the longevity of our relationships.
